Are you getting ready to move into your new home in Montana? Moving into a new house is exciting, but the list of “to do’s” can be overwhelming. Here are 10 tasks that are often overlooked when moving into a new home. If you accomplish these, you’ll be way ahead of the game on moving day.

Before Moving Out:

1.Find a Reputable Mover and Reserve Your Date - Spring/summer is peak moving season in Montana, so don’t delay or your preferred mover might be booked!

2.Sell, Donate or Throw Away Unwanted Items - This is the perfect time to go through all of your household items and decide what to keep and what to get rid of. There’s no sense in packing and moving items you don’t want to keep.

3.Buy Packing Supplies - Using professional moving supplies (boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape) to pack your items will help insure that they are safe and secure during your move. Be sure to label each box so you know what the contents are when you begin unpacking.

4.Arrange for Services to Be Terminated - Be sure to contact your service companies (power, water, trash, cable, internet, phone, etc.) to terminate your services with them.

5.Submit a Change of Address Form - This can be accomplished on the USPS website online for a small fee, or you can submit a paper form at your local post office for free.

6.Create an Essentials Box - This box should contain everything you will need at first in your new home: cleaning supplies, scissors, light bulbs, paper products, snacks, and a first aid kit. Either keep this box with you as you move, or load it last so you can unload it at your new home first.

Before Moving In:

7.Clean - Before unpacking your belongings, thoroughly clean your new home. Wipe out all of the cabinets and drawers, clean the refrigerator and oven (if needed), and clean the carpets.

8.Paint - It’s so much easier to paint an empty house than a full one. If you need to touch up paint or change a wall color, do it before the moving truck arrives with your household items.

9.Set Up Services - Contact your service companies (power, water, trash, cable, internet, phone, etc.) to set up new service. It’s a good idea to have these services taken care of before you move in.

10.Change the Locks - If you aren’t the first residents in the new house, change the locks to be on the safe side.

Taking care of these 10 items before you move into your new Montana home will set you up for a smooth transition. Congratulations on your new home!
